On some public computers, when the computer is rebooted, all the files are wiped and the default Windows installation is put back. How would I accomplish something like this for my home PC in order to avoid getting viruses?

If you're worried about viruses, why not install an anti-virus program. There are some really good ones out there that are free. I use AVG's free version on both of my computers.

i agree. i never get a virus win 7 has / vista also let you set up restore points. not a new feature but "improved". unless you are confused and thinking of cloning your hard drive. youd use ghost or acronis. but thats not something you want to do frequently.

What the OP requests can only be done from a server based network system. When the computer logs into the network, the profiles and some of the primary HD partition is overwritten by the network. It is not a reinstall per se but it wipes out anything written in the profiles directories.

Another option is to use a virtual machine on top of your base system. You could install your OS of choice (Win7/Vista/whatever) as a VM and then save that VM load out to a single file. Then each time you boot the VM, point back to the saved file. Daily use would be like this: 1) boot computer 2) login 3) start virtual machine from saved file 4) login 5) use as necessary Wash, rinse, repeat... This eliminates repeated wipes of the hard drive and is much quicker.
