but telling someone to not own a computer because their child will be preyed upon is just incorrect.

Who did that?

If you were referring to me I clearly said "at MY HOUSE" and as for "MY KIDS."

Not having their own but using the same one all our family uses didn't hinder their completion of school work, nor lower their grades.

Don't we all make our own decisions when parenting our children? Asking for feedback on here one is pretty much guaranteed to get many points of view, some of which the parent totally disagrees with. I doubt if anything here will change one's sense of right and wrong for their own family.

gracey if something bad happened to you in church I hope it was dealt with approp. by those in authority. It is true church nor anyone else is a totally safe proof place for kid's. We have to protect them at all times the best we know how.

I read a statistic yest. that literally made me sick to my stomach..the average number of visits per day by most high school kid's to a social website such as facebook is 10.

Somebody somewhere needs some parenting classes. There is no way my teenager would have idle time long enough to do that.

This is what I was referring to. So are you saying that if someone chooses to parent different than you they need classes ?

The OP just asked for some info. not judemental attitudes.

Wouldn't setting yourself as the admin and reviewing the history and temp files be both safer and less invasive?

The kids were using a different browser and nothing ws showing up in the parental controls.

We need two computers at home as we both use them. She uses them for her homework and projects. And I use them for normal things, plus I'll be taking courses soon and I need to be on as much as she does.

*Just buy a wireless laptop(your daughter can help you pick out one) and it can be used when either one of you is on the home computer -- you can sync it to the computer (you'll need a router) that's what I've done here... that way you can access your online classes(and files) on either computer.
Whatever rules are in place for the home computer will also apply to the laptop.

Are you the op's spokesperson or something?

I don't know why you are speaking for her but if you think my comments were "judgemental" you missed what I said above...

I wanted to add- For some reason you seem to be personally offended by my posts that were not directed to you to begin with st...and I am not going to argue the point with you anymore..you don't have to agree with my views and vice versa.

Nope, not at all offended. I just found a few of them judgmental, especially the one telling parents to take some lessons.

My two older kids have laptops (they are 11 and 13) and we use SafeEyes. It provides all kinds of options for filtering and monitoring- you can block sites like YouTube, or filter it. You can block social networking sites or just allow one specific site. It also allows you to set times for access on the internet- for example, my kids' computers automatically log them off the internet at 5pm. It doesn't matter what browser they use- they cannot get on the internet without my username and password. I receive an activity log in my email every week that tells me what websites they access the most and what they've tried to search for online. We have chat/IMs blocked, but it can also be set to provide transcripts of chats.

Because we have such good filtering software, the kids can use their laptops wherever and whenever they want. I occasionally run maintenance and I can double check cookies and temp files, etc... but SafeEyes is fabulous, IMO. The only other thing I'd advise is a keylogger to keep track of email content.

I also download adblock programs that filter the kinds of ads they see.

Depending on how much control you feel you need to have, you could password protect the computer so that she can't use it at all unless you log her in, and you can set it automatically log out when the computer goes to sleep... there are literally dozens of ways to safeguard computer usage.

My son tried that too, but Spector Pro is independent of browsers and gets screen shots of EVERYTHING they do. Invaluable.
