Do you have people assume you named your kids after someone? I get ribbed all the time because my son has the same name (but different spelling) of a Hollywood director who came out about the time he was born. Not really. We get miffed family because we DIDN'T name our kids after family members. All but one of our kids IS in a round about way named for someone or because of someone. Ty - his first name is after a guitar player my husband likes. Aryn is named Aryn because my Grandmother told me that I needed to name her Aryn when I was barely 6 weeks along. Ethan's middle name was chosen by my husband in honor of his best friend. Zoe's middle name is the last name of an author my husband and I both enjoy. Blessings, Garsy

ORIGINAL: Tinkerbell_ Then there's Hotel for Dogs. Total tear jerker. Thing 2 decided he wants a handicapped dog after watching that movie. Do you have people assume you named your kids after someone? I get ribbed all the time because my son has the same name (but different spelling) of a Hollywood director who came out about the time he was born. I can guarantee he wasn't named after him, but a lot of people assume that. Does anyone else get this? Awww, that's sweet of him! Not very much. The only one people did it with was Shiloh b/c of Brangelina. It was funny the first time someone asked. I was like "who, named who what?" I had no idea. We don't really keep up with Hollywood lives like that. Most people are surprised to find out it's a city in the bible. We really liked the meaning of it combined with her middle name. Shiloh is from Joshua 18:8 meaning peace; abundance; his gift. Her middle name is Grace - Prov. 3:34 - favor; blessing She was completely unexpected. It took me a few months to really adjust to the idea of being pg again. We were hoping for a boy (since we only have 1), but the day we found out she was a girl, DH and I went out to lunch together (Cheesecake Factory) came home and looked up Christian baby girl names and found these. We read the meanings and just knew it was perfect for her. She truly was and has been a gift and blessing from God, undeserved and abundant! :)

I know a man whose name is Charles Charles, Jr. Why would you name your child THAT???? Very odd to me. You know the kidding you endured growing up with a name like that, why put your child through it???

To put a different spin on this discussion.....sort of. Is is the parents who are narcissists when they name a child a name WE think is weird...or is it everyone around them who is narcissistic...because we assume we can judge what is a strange name or not?

Anyone who names their baby Moxie Crimefighter has got to know what a weird name that is and how their kid is going to get teased and bullied by everyone! Tell me that is not a strange name! Why would anyone do that to a kid? How about Peekaboo Street? I don't know what they called her for a long time but they let her pick her name. I think they said that was one of the first things she said and they said that's her name. Tell me that's not narcissistic. Let's just see what she likes or the first word she says? What if it had been poopies? What if she hadn't talked till she was 5? What would they have called her till then? How about Grace Slick wanted to name her daughter God? Then she picked China which is okay but come on, God? Shiloh reminds me of that Neil Diamond song about his horse. I wouldn't want people to think I was a horse.

A friend suggested to his wife that they name their first child Marc Andrew Richard. She almost fell for it until she realized that because their last name starts with a C, his initials would spell his name. DH thought this was a great idea, and even suggested an alternative version for us; I thought it was impossibly cheesy. It seems to be split along gender lines. DH also wanted us to use J names for all our kids, since we're both Js. If people go that route, that's great for them, but I don't think I need any additional help when it comes to forgetting names!

It could also be pretty confusing when they're older and mail arrives for J. SuchandSuch and you don't know for which of you it i!

I'm not seeing how this is a negative thing. How many people really know your initials anyway? I think it was pretty creative of the dad, personally. quote:

Who cares? I'll never name a child of mine Amy, b/c I had a best friend in HS named Amy who completely dumped me for my ex-boyfriend who just wanted her b/c she was a slut. I'd rather a horse I think then something like that ;) It's just a name, people associate names with pets, other people, places, etc all the time. I think it's silly to choose a name or not choose one b/c of what other people will think. I agree about the extreme ones like Apple and stuff like that, but some of the others being mentioned, eh, they're names, just not common ones.

Oh please, please, don't start with the "J" names.....You might end up like the Duggars!!!! LOL--it was the Duggars that convinced DH that maybe we could skip the J names. He's since come up with the idea of giving them all J middle names; that could work. Re mixing names up, my mother used to go through my sister's name, my dad's name, the dog's name, then the name of the dog that had died 15 years ago, before hitting on mine. She vehemently denies ever using the dogs' names but it happened! And I'm already doing the same thing. Not all of our names were similar but I figure I don't need the extra help mixing names up.

I think I would have minded less if she would admit she'd done it.

my grandmother used to do that with us....she'd start with her kids and work through all 28 of the grandkids...until she landed on the right one. LOL...she always laughed and said..."I swore I'd never do this....".... but it worked for us. I never minded it..and I never minded mixing up my kids' names...until the day I cross gendered mixed it up...and called one of my sons one of my daughters' name....LOL...the look of shock I got! Now it happens all the time..and they are so over it!
