Of course in my book Frank Zappa takes the cake for unusual names. His daughter and son (both also musicians) were named Moon Unit and Dweezel, respectively. Moon Unit was a one hit wonder with "Valley Girls" and Dweezel has toured behind Ozzy Ozbourne as his guitarist. (if you have not heard the Ozbourne/Zappa cover of the BeeGees' 'Stayin Alive' you have missed a truly bizzare experience)

Well I live in the far northern section of the US and 'Laurie' and 'Lori' are pronounced exactly the same here and 'Dawn' and 'Don' have a different vowel sound. I'm guessing 'Laurie' is more Law-REE? And 'Lori' is more Low-REE? In the north we usually pronounce through the R sound so it comes out more lor-(as in lord) EE. We don't drag out the first vowel. I like somewhat uncommon names. Not unusual in the sense that they are made up, have awkward spellings, or are borrowed from place names, but unusual in that they aren't in the top 50 names. At one time I had a personal philosophy about pairing common and uncommon names, but the last few kids kinda messed that up (Jude Sverre, and Luke Allan) for circumstantial reasons. Sometimes its hard to have a naming philosophy when you can't agree on any names at all.

All four of our boys have traditional names. I didn't realize how common ds4's name was until he was a toddler. His name is usually said "DS4!!!". You know the tone... It's then that you realize the number of boys in the room with the same name! The only unique name we used was with ds2. He's named after my great-great grandfather. We went with the European/old world spelling. It's his middle name, so there's no spelling it out/correcting misspellings. Personally, I am named after my great grandmother. It wasn't until my 30's that my mother realized that she had misspelled my name!

I think too weird and means something else is bad. For example...Whalen for a girl. What if she is overweight? Even if she is not, I think having a name like whale n would be horrible for a child. And the giving common names with odd spellings irritates me big time. People rarely see the spelling, yet, the child will have to spell that name for the rest of his/her life. If it is actually a historically correct spelling, just not as well known, it does not bother me. But the Ahmmayleah's (pronounced Amelia) really bother me. However, Rian for Ryan or Rhys for Reese do not bother me as those are the original spellings of those cultures.

My first name, Jocelyn, is not common. I am forever having to spell it. Since I had an easy maiden name it was not bad, but my married name is horrible and I have to spell it all the time. If we have kids they will have to have easy first names. I love Caleb & Jackson (my husband wants just Jack) Nicolas, Alexander Girls Name: Katelyn or Katie John (from a book) I love regal names.

I like a name that is heard and known to be a name, but is on the edge of that. Something that you haven't heard in a while. I did change the spelling of my Joscelyn (from the more normal Jocelyn), so that we could more easily nick-name her Josie... then her Sunday school teacher (a friend of mine) wrote her name as 'Joci' as if short from Jocelyn, and I just thought, "And you couldn't have told me that idea before I chose a unique spelling!"

I am fan of uncommon names, not necessarily unique ones. I always wanted my children to have not particularly common names, but spell-able ones. For their middle names, they all odd sounding dutch family names. Most of my kid's names are family names. Do(es) your child(ren) have (an) unusual or common name(s)? My children's first names are; William (Will), Eleanora (Rory), Ciera, Nathaniel (Nate), Bronte (Gigi, after her middle name) and Theodore (Teddy). So, other than William, I wouldn't say they were really common names. Bronte is pretty unusual, but most people we know don't find it hard to spell/say. What are some common names you like? Jamison, James, Samual, Oliver, Sarah What are some more unusual names you like? Rochelle, Tiane

ORIGINAL: silent12 What are some more unusual names you like? Rochelle, Tiane If you are a girl named Rochelle..you'll find it isn't that unusual a name to be given...just not popular with the people who make pencils, etc. LOL We just like names. We pick names because of either their family connection and/or their meaning (usually both together). After I named my first daughter a very simple name.....and found that no one could spell it anyway since people had come up with all sorts of creative ways to spell a very old-fashioned name...I just really don't care if other people can spell their names or not. 9 times out of 10 you could have a simple name like Anne...and get it spelled 'wrong' (because of the other spelling of Ann)...so why worry about it? I don't do names that are just weird to me (like Bambi, Sugar, Atlas, etc) but I don't worry what others will think of the names we pick. That's just me though.

My kids have very boring names...Amanda, Joshua and Daniel. No strange spellings... Amanda was supposed to be Andrea, but when she was born, she just looked like Amanda. The boys...well, one of them, dad chose it...I wanted to name him Matthew. The other one...he's a junior. My granddaughters are Alexis (Lexi), Keiran (Katie) and Virginia (Ginny)...

We have a common last name, so we wanted not-common names. Though no wierd spellings--we didn't want kids to have to spell them all.the.time. The names all have family meanings--Henry is named after my great great grandfather and great grandfather; Harmony Kay is named after my grandmother, Mona Mae (with a nod to Hermione :)), and Hope Eileen is named for Romans 5 and my other grandmother (middle name is related but not exact). So we ended up with 3 H's, totally not planned... So a related question...with three H's, if we have a 4th, do we need another H name?? (The kids have been lobbying for another one (specifically a boy), though I'm feeling done.)

so on a whim, I went through the kid's school directory and made a list. I already listed the names by grade level, but went through and figured out the most common names over the 6 year span of kids in the building. The top 10 boys names in order of most to least popular: Nicholas/Nick/Nik or any variation Jacob William/Will Connor Sam/Samuel Logan Ethan Dylan Ryan Now for the girls: (I only have 8 for the girls as there is a serious tie for the 9th and 10th spots.) Madison Olivia Sarah Elizabeth Hayley/Halle/Haleigh Emma Anna/Annie Kayle/Kaylee Some of the more unique names boys - Khai and Khoi - a pair of brothers, Gavin, Graham, Hudson, Kamari, Akil, Pranav, Germar, Daizon, Gabe, Keefer, Jarrett, Dyren Now for the girls: Campbell, Haverlee, Jayleanna, Anastasia, Jewelia, Bailee (mostly for the spelling) Merin, Giselle, Holidey, Samanta (NOT SamantHa), Rida, Trinity, Aspen, Jensen, Miyah, Autumn, Kierra, Elora, Devin, Zainab, Peyton, Karsyn, Macie. Blessings, Garsy

I know people seem to not like it when people use the same letter for all their children's name. Our children have all the same initials, even middle names. I never planned to do that but it just happened with the first two so I continued it with the third.

I wouldn't feel obligated if I were you. Name your 4th whatever you wish, if and when the time comes. That said, my aunt and uncle named all 5 of their children so they had the same initials. It came in handy with monogramming I guess since they all went to a private school for a time with uniforms with initials embroidered on the shirts. My cousins however HATED it! Garsy

Phew, I am safe. I just asked my girls if it bothered them that they all had the same initials and they looked at me confused and said why would I be bothered by that?
