I like almost all the books mentioned in this thread! The only book I read that I absolutely detested was Hard Times by Charles Dickens. It was very dreary. It's a shame it was the first Dickens book I read because I know he's a good writer but I can't bring myself to read any of his other books

The only book I really actively disliked reading was for my AS Literature exam- "Spies" by Michael Frayn. Seriously, that book is awful. Especially since I was reading it next to "Wuthering Heights", which threw all the bad metaphors and plot holes sharply into contrast...

Oh wow, I actually loved the Scarlet Letter and Mayor of Castorbridge! The one I thought was a real snoozer was My Antonia, by Willa Cather.

Most of the books I had to read were for Literature. I remember "The Great Gatsby", "Things Fall Apart", "Arrow of God", "The Pearl". I didn't particularly dislike them. but The Pearl was the most melancholy one though. And once we began the analysis of Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" & "Arrow of God" I realised that these books were very insightful.

No one forced us to read a book we were given reading assignments yes, but there was no forced reading. The classics were read but I didn't read aloud - my stuttering embarrassed me so I kept quiet or pretended to have laryngitis. Many of us did "cheat" and read those commentaries or synopsis about the well known classics so we could do the book reports. I never got into reading the classics until later on in life -- when I was young it all sounded dumb to me since no one I knew talked like that.

Great Expectations......."Food and a file".......I still have nightmares about Miss Havisham. And The Good Earth just made me sad. Honestly, everything else I loved....I am embarrassed to admit I cried while we were reading Romeo and Juliet aloud in class. And I never get tired of Jane Eyre. Now that I understand a little more about the world, I need to re-read Fahrenheit 451. I would bet it hits REALLY close to home now.

I'm glad theprincessbuttercup mentioned Jane Eyre --- the book is so much better than the movies - I hardly knew what I missing until I read the book!

For me there were many although I wouldn't call them 'forced'. They were required reading. I remember using "Cliff Notes" for the ones I was sure would put me fast asleep. That's the way I got around the forced part, I suppose. The one that I most remember was "A Seperate Peace" By John Knowles. I considered reading it again just out of curiosity. So far I haven't.

only 2 books were forced on me, one in college, on in highschool. In highschool we were forced to read "Into the Wild" The book is just torturous. It is less of a book and more of a political slant on paper. We were forced to read it, but then told WHY, the teacher wanted us to know what we would get into one day, and what to watch out for(best teacher I have ever had) The one in college was a NYTimes best seller for that year....."Nickle and dimed" I believe. Again, slant on paper. Some of the ones mentioned I read, with gusto, others I just absorbed, these were the only ones that were forced on me. Some that others hated that I loved included: The power of one(tale of a British low class South African boy, as he grows up, in apartheid South Africa, and takes a look into the racial and social-political tensions of the time, also great for anyone who likes boxing) Great Gatsby, 1984(REQUIRED reading in my middle and high school systems.) Fahrenheit 451, Snowcrash, The Bloodstained Rabbit, Shakespeare, Homer, most greek and roman mythology, The alchemist(one of the plays done in the time of Shakespeare, but not by him) Neuromancer, The diary of Anne Frank, Daniels Story(ONLY book to make me cry, along with everyone in the class, even the most manly jock in school was weeping) Herodotus, The code of Hammurabi(the actual code was required for a history class) and I stop there before I start digging through my old book piles.

When I was eight or nine my mom would lock me in my bedroom and force me to read the classics. I remember crying while trying to read books like Robinson Crusoe or Old Man and The Sea, because I was so mad at my mom for not letting me play outside with my friends. So by the time I got to high school, I hated to read. I used to borrow the Cliff's Notes from friends to avoid opening a book. When I got older, my sister talked me into reading Pride and Prejudice. For the first time in my life I feel in love with reading, and with Jane Austen... Since then, I can't seem to put books down!

I liked to read so I had read a lot of the classics.. only one I really remember was we had to read Call of the Wild for 3 years in a row for some reason. I guess that and the Grapes of Wrath were one of the few books I hated. My school district didn't make us read Greek Mythology.

I liked Wizard of EarthSea, but I don't remember enjoying The Good Earth all that much.

I read Little Women in 8th grade, that is a book no teenaged boy should have to read.

Books I read in school and hated Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury. Simply awful. Made worse by the fact that it was assigned over Christmas break in high school and we were supposed to keep an extensive journal with reflections on each chapter. The Old Man and the Sea- I don't like Hemmingway. Habits of the Heart by Robert Bellah. This was the book our entire freshman class of college was supposed to read. It was dreadful and very few of us actually finished it.

I love to read and actually liked some of the books you guys mentioned. What I didn't like was anything Shakespeare. I think it's because of the language. I couldn't understand anything they were saying and the teachers never explained it to us, we just had to read it. If it has to be explained to me, I don't want to read it. My sister had to read The Old Man & The Sea and Animal Farm, I didn't. Weird cause we went to the same high school. I'll have to read 1984. I'd forgotten about it.
