Some folks are friendly and kind and helpful to non-believers yet cannot find themselves able to do it for other believers.

Isn't that odd?

Just because I talk to you at church doesn't mean I'm your friend.

Why would a Believer want to be "Friends" with a non-believer?

I am friendly to non-believers, kind to non-bleievers, helpful to non-bleievers, pray for non-believers, witness to non-believers; but do not have non-believing friends.

Thanks
RC

I agree 100 %. A Christian may have some common interests with a non-believer, but without a common Love for Christ i don't see how a believer could be close to a non-believer.

We are called to be salt and light in a dark decaying world (Matt 5: 13 - 16), we are called to go out into the dark and decaying world (Matt 28: 18 - 20).

We are not called to be inward looking, introspectively naval gazing!!

That term is usually used for the cliches that can happen among a local body of believers. They get so inward focused that no one can break into the huddle - believer or not.

Like I often do, I have to agree with PrairieHiker's opinion on this subject

Dude, I don't think PH responded to this thread... lol.

Anyway, I agree with both sides.

I think we need to be careful when comparing ourselves with the Lord, and how He befriended sinners. If He didn't befriend sinners, we would all be lost. We are all sinners.

That being said, He did give us a mission. We can't completely remove ourselves from the world, and be any good to those dying around us. I think this is where the phrase... "so heavenly minded, no earthly good" comes to mind.

That being said, providing your friends who are not believers whom you may have had for many years, are respectful of your faith and of your choices... then what is wrong with it?

That being said... lol... if your friends start to berate you or disrespect your faith, or try to bring you down, or get you to sin... then it is time to cut ties with those people. That was something I had to do. It isn't easy.

We have to be careful we don't allow our desire to reach people blind us to the fact that their lifestyle can effect us.

1 Corinthians 15:33 (New International Version)

33Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."

I said previously "Since starting this thread in Aug 2009 I have become involved in a local amatuer musical assoc which has about 70 people, of which about 8 are Christian. It is a real breath of fresh air, mixing with folks who have interests outside of the church, and yet have God's image stamped on their lives (Gen 1: 27).

It has also led to lots of spiritual conversations that I would not have had otherwise :) "

............................

Just an update, our next production is to be 'Chidren of Eden' based on Gen Ch's 1 - 9!! God will have centre stage. Oh, by the way, the last time that they did a musical based on a biblical narrative was 1927!!!!

So, you can imagine the opportunities there will be for Christians (like me) to befriend non-believers and talk to them about the Lord of Creation!!?

One of the many reasons some people never find Christ is because of the barriers Christians erect. Christians should be authentic, accessible and not so heavenly minded that unbelievers cannot relate to them on SOME level.

Remember, Jesus blended in so well that Judas had to point Him out.

Check out my series "Five Reasons People Reject Christ". I've been guilty of a few, so I know.

It is all too easy for us to fall into the trap of living only with a circle of Christian friends. Does anyone have experience/tips in how to make meaningful non-Christian friendships that can lead to faith sharing?

You're quite right about the trap, TartanPaint. It is an error easy to fall into and not as easy to crawl out of.

I lived this (falling in/crawling out) to some extent. Oh, I never totally cut myself off but I certainly minimized the contact. And for a season in my life perhaps it was appropriate.

But I work out and get into discussions with others all the time. I am in a book group where discussions take place. I sing with an eclectic choir where discussions happen. I live in a wonderful community where I have all kinds of opportunities.

Mostly it is about being observant, watching and listening. The needs are there. Most people aren't looking for answers. But there are a few. And then I can share Jesus.

And by just being a friend others know where they can turn when they have a need. That is perhaps most important.

I have non believer friends, but I don't share my problems with them. Those are reserved for my saved friends.

I personally have few if any Christian friends. I grew up in the church and went to a Christian university. But for the most part most of the Christians I know really want nothing to do with me. As an upper level athlete the vast majority of my friends are non-Christian. And if I were completely honest have a more realistic although off base view of life. As Christians we tend to be like campers sitting around a fire trying to keep warm with one another. When we are commanded to go out into the world and Bring that very fire that keeps us warm to those who so desperately need it.

I feel as though people are far more likely to accept the message of Christ from a friend then a "friendly" Christian with a witnessing agenda.

That is why relationship is so important. Jesus didnt simple come down and preach then huddle up with other Christians and leave. He was relational. He cared he didnt simply say here is the truth take it or leave it. Thats to easy and to be honest its a cop out that waaaaaay to many Christians do.

If I don't want to be friends with someone just because they are not believers, imo that just screams 'better than you'. We must remember we too were once just like them. If it wasn't for my christian friend who I was close too, who showed me Jesus in thought word and action, I probably never would have gone to church.

I think you hit it right on the head. It is extremely hard for me to connect with Christians, and I think it is because they perceive me to be some sort of reprobate, simply by the way I look. Its quite sad really.
