Hey, y'all. I have a question. I had pondered putting this in the college/career folder, but my question really pertains more to finances, and I'm looking for a more serious answer.

In August, I should graduate with a Master's degree, but it's in a field that has relatively low pay and not one that will bring riches or bonuses. I expect that I will have to do extra work on the side, but some options seem to be a lot of work for little return. I still have a few years to take risks with my finances, but my parents are aging and after the recent economic downturn, I decided I would try to help them out financially if I'm able.

What are some options for making extra money using this credential? What opportunities have the best return for the amount of time put into them? For example, I heard that writing is relatively low pay, and teaching workshops... well... the one I considered required me to pay my own way there and the benefit was free admission to the conference.

In what area is your masters degree?
I can think of several things outside a 9 to 5 job that one could do for extra $$.

My Master's is in Mental Health Counseling. I'm definitely interested in Biblical Counseling as well as other areas such as Gerontological counseling, child & family counseling, and a few other areas. Prevention is a huge area right now and one I would like to focus on. I would love to hear what ideas you may have.

Hey, you could be the future Dr. Laura with your own radio show!

Kind teasing you, but am also serious. Look to other family and marriage counselors like her, who have become VERY successful, as a mentor. Read their books and mimic them. In the mean time, look for contracting opportunities with the VA on FBO.gov. Being in the military can be tough, many families will need a lot of support and counseling now and in the future. Also might check with area hospitals to see if they have any contracting opportunities. They may not have room in the budget for an employee, but you could start a practice as a contractor. Same for schools and churches, we have a big need in our area for specialist who can work with autistic kids. I'm sure I'll think of more later, but I'm tired and am heading to bed.

Oh no, not Dr. Laura!! I guess I could think of things along that line, but talk shows just aren't my thing, y'know?

The one thing about marriage & family counselors is that, while they may be successful by writing books and speaking at workshops, I have no idea if the $$ are following the success. I mean, I really don't know. I do have a contact in the book publishing business I could ask, but I don't personally know those who I would like to emulate. I am trying to change that with blogging & twitter... that seems to be the preferred method of getting noticed these days.

Thanks for the suggestion about contracting... I hadn't thought about that. Autism isn't one of my specialties, but I'm sure I could develop a specialty out of something I know a little better.

Look into some really nice resort/hotels that offer spas and such. Then sell weekend family retreats packages with "family bonding" sessions... just don't call it "counseling" or the guys may not show up!

Seriously, if my wife came in and said we have a weekend of "family counseling", I'd sooner prefer to jump off a cliff. But if it were packaged as a "retreat" where I can get a massage, boil in the hot tub, etc... I'm in. How can one argue and fight when totally relaxed after a couples massage?

There you go... now THAT'S what I'm looking for.

Lots of guys attend marriage retreats with their wives. I've never been to one, but I'd suspect it takes a little coaxing to get the guys to go. No, there's no "counseling", but there are workshops and such. Actually, I could do single's workshops on one of those cruises, too... I forgot all about those.

I'm not a cruise person, don't like being stuck on a boat unless I have a fishing pole in hand and beer in the cooler. But I have seen similar workshops. I've even seen some real estate continuing ed schools offer CE while on a cruise. They still do it, so obviously there is market demand. The hard part about starting such a gig is that you have to know where and who to contact to book such trips. You have to become a part time travel agent, and will need to visit or try it out before selling it. Just budget for it, and enjoy your test weekends knowing it's a legit business expense.
