I'm trying to avoid the candy overload this Easter. What are some other ideas for childrens baskets?

If your kids are used to candy...nothing will substitute ...what exactly are you looking for - no junk or different junk?

There are single serving sizes of trail mixes and those kinds of things.

I have done this: fixed a basket with stickers, stampers, miniature toys, eggs, kid jewelry, stuffed ducks/lambs and then included one chocolate bunny in the center.

Home made cup cakes, cookies, snack mix, coloring books, paint sets play dough, fill eggs with small toys or money--kites, balls, skys the limit

I've put toothbrushes & toothpaste; body wash; bubble bath; shampoo; arts & crafts supplies; pens/pencils; small books; even gift cards.

Flashlights, kids fake tattoos, stickers, coloring books and colors, sun glasses, planting accessories, muffin mix and an apron (something easy enough for kid to help with making), special pillow (my kids LOVE pillows), stamps and ink, cheap dollar store frame that they can decorate themselves, play doh.

How about "coupons"? ... i.e. "This Coupon is Good For...(anything you'd like it to be) ... a good back scratch, DVD Rental, Dinner at McDonald's, a night off from washing the dishes, lunch date with Mom or Dad, and the list is endless.

Okay, it only our second Easter but....while I am planning to put candy in his basket, I also am doing non candy things. Last year he didnt get any candy because he was too little to eat it! So he got a book, baseball caps, and new pacifiers! This year I have him some cotton candy and a mashmellow "sucker" but he will also get a book, and a small toy.

One year, I didnt my brother's basket for my mom and I got him a fishing "theme" WIth hooks, bobbers, luers, bait, etc. (Of course I threw in some gummy worms too!)

Maybe try things they need. Like they use pencils for school? well instead of getting them the ugly yellow ones, get them fancy ones. Or instead of those ten cent folders, how about a folder that has designs? or neat socks? I would try and stick to stuff that they need but just fancy. And remember, that Easter is for the the Risen Christ. Maybe throw some bible study stuff in there too

We do "spring baskets" on the first day of spring. They'll have a little candy, and gum because I don't allow gum normally. Flashlights from the dollar store, sidewalk chalk, stamps, playdo, jumpropes, rain boots, umbrella...spring kind of things.

How about getting them something to do with what we're really celebrating at Easter?

"The Miracle Maker" is an animated feature-length movie about the life of Jesus and it is WONDERFUL!! I was really moved by it, and it's really high quality. (The link I gave is for its listing on Amazon)

Or a book: (all links from Amazon)

"The Very First Easter"

"J is for Jesus. An Alphabet and Activity Book"

"The First Easter" (this one's a board book)

The books and DVD are a great idea for remembering the real meaning of the day.. I'd give one of those in addition to the basket of CANDY.

Come on folks. It's a holiday, one time a year. Give the little tykes their candy. Come on now, toothpaste in their Easter basket, things they need, this is just so wrong!

Give them chocolate bunnies, marshmallow peeps, malted milk ball eggs, and jelly beans. We know that's what they really want. You can ration it out so they don't eat it all at once.

Have a heart.

When my children were really young (preschool), I made little chicks out of yellow velvety terrycloth with felt beaks and button eyes. As they got older I put finger puppets in or other small toys and later I put a book in each basket. You can put a bracelet or necklace in a girl's basket.

Not everyone can have candy. One of mine is allergic to corn syrup, which is in every kind of (non-sugar free) candy. We also don't do fake sugars, which throws out most sugar free stuff. Candy is not necessary.
